Why does one want to know whether God exists or not?
Before we answer the question about the existence of God, one should
inquire why we even want to know the answer to this question. Why is this
question even relevant to one's life?
The idea of "God" comes into most people's lives at a very young age
because of the way God was explained in the religion their parents or
families followed, or from the culture and traditions followed by the
communities around them.
As we grow old, every aspect of our life is increasingly driven by logic
and rational reasoning. We were told from early on that for every single
thing that happens around us, there is something or someone responsible
for it. Our minds are trained to look for the root cause of every action,
either to blame it or to give it the credit. As time passes by and we grow
older, we are convinced by the "Cause and Effect" approach, and this idea
is strongly cemented into our logic that for everything that happens in
our life there is a specific cause.
Depending on one's religious traditions and beliefs, people are told to
follow certain guidelines or commandments that would guarantee an outcome
that is in their favour, and make them happy in this lifetime and also
after death. As the years pass by, we see that this is not the case. We
follow all the rules of the society, rules of our religion, follow all
standards of what is considered to be the standards of a "Good" person,
but even after that, we see that our life has hurdles, suffering, loss,
heartbreaks, and many other painful situations. Even after following all
the rules our hearts and minds don't seem to be happy and peaceful at all
times. Using the training we had all our life to use logic and reason, we
look for the root cause of our suffering. We find a person, an external
situation, or a thing to blame for our suffering. This approach works for
some time, but we increasingly find ourselves not being able to find the
root cause of our suffering in many cases. We start looking for answers
everywhere. But the options seem to run out, we start looking towards
God.
Religions say that God exists, our rational mind says -- show me the proof!
All the religions and many cultural traditions lead to the answer that all
the things that can't be explained by our logical and rational mind, are
the acts of a powerful being, and we call it God. As humans, we created
God in the image of our own self, as a super powerful being looking more
like a human and behaving like a human. Some people whose hearts are ready
to devote and believe in the idea of God, feel comfort in this idea, and
become believers of God.
Others, whose minds are logical and want proof for the existence of God,
either continue their search through other rational means (science,
mathematics, reading etc.,) or make a conclusion that there is no way
anyone can conclusively find out whether God exists or not. And they call
themselves Agnostic.
And some others give up their search to believe that there is no God, and
our life and the universe is a random phenomenon. And they call themselves
Atheists.
Can anyone stop being amazed by the incredible creation around us?
Whether one is a believer of God, or calls themselves an Agnostic or an
Atheist, one can't stop being amazed by all the incredible creation around
us. There are trillions of cells just in our own body, there are no
two humans who look alike, no two animals look alike, no two plants look
alike, there are billions of species, and even no two snow flakes look
alike. There are millions, billions, trillions, quadrillions,
zillions, gazillions of unique creations in this universe. No one can
disagree that all these are not created by humans and our minds. Then who
created them and why? Just because we don't know, our logical mind doesn't
automatically want to agree with the presence of a single creator or
God.
Is it possible that we are trying to understand and know about something that
is more complicated than our own minds? Can something understand other that is
more complicated than itself? Our minds have their own limitations. Even a
simple drug, excess alcohol, or minor influences of substances have known to
clearly show that our ability to perceive through our senses and understand
through our minds gets severely convoluted. Are we trying to use our mind to
know something that is possibly trillions of times more complex than our human
minds? If so, what other tools do humans have to understand the creation
around us?
Is it possible that, while searching for the creator everywhere with the logic
of our minds, we are somehow overlooking the possibility that the creator
might be closer than close to us? Might there be a possibility that there is
no need to search for God anywhere?
Whether you believe in God or not, I think these questions might intrigue you
as much as they intrigue me. We will do an inquiry into finding out possible
ways to answer these existential questions in my upcoming blogs. Please stay
tuned!
Peace! Aum(OM)! Amen! Inshallah!
